Unfair Mileage Rates Are Hurting Ontario’s Homecare Workers
Canadians from coast to coast are reeling from the sharp rise of gas prices, with no end in sight. And though some relief has been offered through provincial gas tax breaks, one segment of workers is being negatively affected more than most: homecare workers, who provide clients with important support in their homes.
We are calling on ParaMed, an employer of homecare workers across Ontario, to immediately increase the mileage rate that they provide their personal support worker (PSW) employees. Currently, workers receive as little as $0.44 per kilometre while travelling hundreds of miles in their personal vehicles each week. The increased cost of gas is forcing them to make a difficult decision: visit your clients or be able to afford the necessities of life.
Sign our petition and raise your voice to speak up for these essential workers. The time is now for ParaMed and companies like it to make a permanent change, for the health and longevity of in-home care.
